FCIACs Begin: Wreckers Face Danbury

It took another down-to-the-wire, wait-till-the-final-whistle finish.

But finally, the FCIAC playoffs are set. The 4 quarterfinals will be played Thursday.

Staples’ exciting 1-1 draw with Wilton kept the Wreckers (8-4-4) in the #6 spot. They’ll travel to Mill Ridge Intermediate School in Danbury, to face the #3 Hatters (10-3-3). That was the site of their battle in the second game of the season. Danbury won 1-0, in a tight, back-and-forth contest.

Fairfield Warde finished the season undefeated (13-0-3). As #1, they host crosstown rival #8 Fairfield Ludlowe (6-3-7), at 3:30 p.m. The Falcons snagged the last spot yesterday, with a strong 3-0 victory over Greenwich. In their regular season matchup, Warde beat Ludlowe 2-1.

Norwalk also earned a berth on the final day, shutting out Westhill 2-0. That keeps crosstown rival Brien McMahon out of the tourney. The #7 Bears (7-3-6) travel to #2 Trumbull (10-2-4, 3:30 p.m.). The Eagles won that earlier game, 3-2.

The 4th quarterfinal pits #5 Wilton (8-2-6) at #4 Greenwich (10-4-2, 3 p.m.). It’s a replay of the 2nd-to-last match of the regular season. The Cards took the Warriors in that contest, 4-2.

“This is the best time of year,” says Staples head coach Dan Woog. “It’s what our guys have worked for since the day the season ended last year. We’ve had some excellent matches, and a few where we squandered opportunities. Now, everyone has to bring their ‘A’ game, every day. We say we’ll play anyone, any time, anywhere, and we really mean it. We can’t wait to get started.”
