Michael Reid ’15 Checks In From South Africa

Michael Reid ’15 — the 2014  tri-captain and Block “S” Most Valuable Player winner — is taking a gap year, prior to entering the College of Charleston. He’s spending the 1st part of the year working with animals in South Africa; in January he heads to Cambodia.

Today, he sent this report:

I just got back from a trip to the neighboring school, where we go every week. The students are mostly orphans, along with a few children who have been diagnosed with AIDS.

I brought 2 soccer balls from Westport to South Africa. Today I decided to bring one, to see what would happen.

I can safely say that today’s trip was one of the most incredible times of my life. I played soccer with all of the kids, for 2 1/2 hours. I’m absolutely soaked in sweat right now, as it’s 90 degrees out.

Despite the language barrier between myself and these children, there was no need for any talk when we dribbled around each other. All we needed was to hear the laughter, see the smiles and sense the happiness.

Today I truly witnessed the beautiful game, in its full capacity.
