5 Wreckers Earn Honors, Scholarships

As the school year races to an end, it’s another awards season for Staples soccer players.

Three Wreckers were singled out at Sunday’s Scholar-Athlete banquet, which honors one senior athlete from each of the school’s 36 varsity teams.  Aidan Mermagen was boys soccer’s scholar-athlete, with the highest GPA.

There were 5 scholarship grants awarded at the event too — and 2 went to soccer players. In addition, Brewster Galley received the $40,000 Coleman Brothers Foundation award. Funds come from the annual WIN tournament. Brewster was cited for his long commitment to the Westport Soccer Association, as a player and referee, as well as his varsity play for the Wreckers.

Jaden Mueller was the winner of the $2,000 Albie Loeffler Scholarship. Named for the founder of the Staples soccer program, it goes to a player who demonstrates academic and athletic excellence, and strong family values.

Three days earlier, Mermagen and Matthew Genser were feted at the High Honors Dinner. They were 2 of the 22 seniors in the top 4% of the graduating class.

One more honor goes to Bruno Guiduli. The tri-captain received the FCIAC Life Teammate Award, for his many activities serving others. Among them: raising over $2,000 for the TopSoccer program for youngsters with disabilities.

Congratulations to Merm, Brew, Jaden, Matt and Bruno — and all the graduating seniors!
