State Championship Set For Saturday — 12 Noon At Ridgefield

Staples’ route to the state championship runs through Ridgefield.

The Wreckers — fresh off an inspiring 3-2 victory over previously unbeaten Glastonbury — take on New Milford this Saturday at 12 noon.  The game will be played at Tiger Hollow — the handsome sports complex at Ridgefield High School.

“Some of our players were surprised the state final is a day game,” said Wrecker head coach Dan Woog.  “They’re used to FCIAC and state championships being played at night.

“But all 11 of Staples’ state titles have been won in day games.

“We love Tiger Hollow,” Woog continued.  “It’s a great turf field, fast and big and well-maintained.  The seating is perfect, and the amenities are nice.  Soccer fans will love it.”

The Wreckers had an excellent game at Tiger Hollow last month, defeating Ridgefield 2-0.

“We’re happy to be playing there,” Woog said.  “But we’d play anyone, any time, anywhere.”

This will be the first-ever meeting between the Wreckers and Green Wave.  They entered the state tournament with identical 14-2-0 regular season records.  Staples — now 21-2-0 — is seeded 5th, and New Milford 6th, on a coin toss, so the Westporters will be the home team.
