Tidal Flats Training Tradition Continues
A Staples soccer tradition — training on the Old Mill tidal flats — works only when low tide and Labor Day afternoon occur at the same time.
Conditions were great today. And though rain was forecast, the weather held too. It was an excellent — and different — session, celebrating the end of a very tough tryout week, while setting the tone of hard work but plenty of smiles in the weeks ahead. Playing on the hard, wet sand is not easy. But soccer is a game of creativity, adaptation and flexibility. Soccer on the flats is one more way the Staples squad prepares for the upcoming season. The ’13 team was joined by Jim Wolf and Mike Carey, both from the 2000 FCIAC champion squad.
Another tradition is Pete Romano hosting the Wreckers for a cookout after the tidal flats training. His burgers, dogs and salads were a perfect end to the day.
“Pete and his wife Robin Tauck — who was away in Greenland today — represent all that is good about our community’s support for Staples soccer,” head coach Dan Woog said. “It’s important that our guys see how many people are behind them. This is a good way for them to understand the importance of ‘paying it forward.'”
Staples’ 3rd pre-season match is set for tomorrow (Tuesday, 4 p.m.). The Wreckers take on perennial SWC powerhouse Newtown, at Treadwell Park.
