Diego Alanis Leads Collection For Zambian Soccer Gear

Inspired by stories of Zambian children who sleep with their soccer cleats on — they love the game so much, and it’s all they have — co-captain Diego Alanis has helped organize a collection drive of soccer shoes and equipment.

This Wednesday (October 16), right after school on the Loeffler Field terrace, he’ll collect donations from Staples varsity, JV and freshman players, and anyone else in the school.

On Thursday (October 17), during the varsity match against Fairfield Warde, there will be donation boxes for Wrecker fans to fill.

The collection drive is coordinated through Kelvin Mutambo, a longtime Westport Soccer Association coach, and his brother.

Patricia Alanis — Diego’s mother — and Karen Scott, mother of co-captain Jack Scott, are also pitching in. They’ve organized food sales at all home matches. Proceeds from those sales will help fund shipping costs for the gear being collected this week.
