0Turkey Bowl: The Air Was Cold, The Soccer Hot
Over 4 dozen alumni, current players and friends swarmed the Wakeman turf for one of the best Turkey Bowls ever. The temperature was freezing and a strong wind blew, but the quality of soccer — and the fun quotient — were both exceptionally high.
Seth Sholes ’78 and Stuart McCarthy ’79 represented the oldest classes. The goal of the day — for the 3rd Turkey Bowl in a row — came from Chris Mitchell ’91. The 40-year-old former Dartmouth College star proved that age is no barrier to ripping a crazy, bending shot. The best goalkeeping performance by a non-keeper was turned in by Nicky Hoberman ’07, a former All-Liberty League field player at Union College.
Charlie Leonard’s uncle Jim Leonard — himself a former Staples player — traveled the furthest to attend as a spectator. Jim is now the head of school at New Mexico’s Santa Fe Prep — and is an assistant coach of their varsity soccer team.
Next up on the winter schedule: the Loeffler Indoor Tournament, set for Friday, Dec. 27 (6 p.m., Staples fieldhouse).
