0Wreckers Donate Funds To African Soccer Groups
Fans who bought food and drinks at Loeffler Field this fall did more than fill their stomachs.
They also helped the Staples boys soccer program aid 2 important soccer-related organizations.
The food tables were run by parents and siblings of the players. Midway through the year, co-captain Diego Alanis wondered if the proceeds could serve soccer beyond the Wreckers.
He and fellow captain Jack Scott came up with 2 ideas. One is a foundation in Zambia, which distributes soccer gear and equipment to local youngsters. Kelvin Mutambo — a beloved Westport Soccer Association and Beachside coach, who grew up in that nation — works tirelessly here to promote it.
The other organization is Goals 4 Ghana, which works to improve the lives of children and their families through soccer. Preston Hirten ’07 — a member of the FCIAC champion and state finalist 2006 team — traveled to Ghana to work with the group in 2009, just a few months before his death from a heart-related ailment.
Both groups received a check for several hundred dollars. Both too will remain in the thoughts of the entire Staples soccer community.
