0Wreckers Volunteer At WIN Tournament
More than a dozen Staples soccer players volunteered this weekend at the 36th annual WIN tournament. They manned timers’ tables, worked as runners and helped out in many other roles.
“The comments we’ve gotten about our guys are fantastic,” said head coach Dan Woog. “It’s an honor for us to do this, because proceeds from the tournament go to the Coleman Brothers Foundation. A lot of our guys have been helped by Coleman scholarships.” The foundation honors the memory of Scott and Keith Coleman, brothers who were killed on 9/11. Scott was a former Staples and WSA soccer player.
Meanwhile, outside on the turf, two Westport Soccer Association U-18 teams battled in the consolation match. The elite premier squad — coached by Steve Baumann and Jason Kreis — battled the graduating seniors to a 2-2 draw. The seniors then prevailed 3-1, in a best-of-3 shootout. Noah Schwaeber made 2 saves in goal to seal the win, including 1 that was spectacular.
The WSA regular season begins next month, with both teams in action.
