0Israel Wins Watermelon Cup — With Golden Goal
Joe Pravder’s strike in golden goal gave Israel a 2-1 victory over Italy in tonight’s 7-v-7 Watermelon Cup final, at Long Lots lower field.
The Israelis had equalized on a shot by Jack Zeldes. Andrew Puchala’s blast had given the Italians an early lead. Tom Messenger — a rising sophomore whose normal position is defender — was outstanding in goal for the losers.
Golden goal saw both squads playing 5-v-5. Watermelon Cup rules dictate that during golden goal time, each team takes 1 man off the field every 2 minutes.
In semifinal action, Israel downed Denmark 5-3, while Italy took Kazakhstan 4-1.
Congratulations to the winning Israelis: Matt Bateman, Brad Cox, Spencer Daniels, Kenji Goto, Chris O’Dell, Joe Pravder and Yanni Tsilfides. Missing were Nate Argosh, Austin Krouse and Daniel Perez Elorza.
