Tryouts Begin With Cooper Test, Evaluations

Nearly 60 Staples soccer candidates gathered at the Staples track early this morning. At exactly 7:30 a.m., the Cooper test — a 2-mile run — began.

Sophomore Gabe Baltierra turned it on in the home stretch, to finish 1st in 11:38. He was followed by other sub-12-minute athletes: Zach Howard (11:42), Nick Ambrose (11:44), Spencer Daniels (11:45), Josh Berman (11:49), Brendan Mahoney (11:53), Timmy Liles (11:55), Matt Engler, Anton Mahr and Chris Martenson (all 11:57).

The group then headed to Wakeman, for an intense 90-minute session. Double sessions continue through next Wednesday.

Head coach Dan Woog said, “This is a good start. The captains have prepared their team well, and the let’s-get-to-work attitude was clear. We have a long way to go, but the foundation is being set.”
