0Match Report: Staples vs. Greenwich
When the Wreckers play their game — possession, passes, balls on the ground — they do well.
When they don’t, they don’t.
Today at Greenwich, they did not. The Cardinals controlled the tempo and style, right from the start. They are primarily an in-the-air team. In the first half they won most of those contests, and the majority of other 50-50 balls.
A tripping penalty kick call gave them an 18th minute lead. A 2nd PK — for a hand ball — doubled the margin in the 35th minute. Keeper Ry Cohen — who had the best game of the day for Staples — guessed right both times, but the shots by Shoki Araki and David Pedreiro were true.
The blue-and-whites amped it up a bit in the 2nd half. Still, they could not solve the hosts’ drop-back defense. Staples’ best chance was from Sam Liles off Matthew Tanzer’s free kick. But keeper Jimmy Johnson was never tested.
It was a disappointing day for the Wreckers. They look to regroup Saturday at 6 p.m., when they take on always-tough Norwalk on the Bears’ turf. Kickoff is 6 p.m. FINAL SCORE: Greenwich 2, Staples 0. SEASON RECORD: 4-2-1.
QUICK KICKS: Alan Fiore staked the reserves to a 1-0 lead. But Greenwich scored 3 unanswered goals, to hand the Wreckers their first loss of the season.
