639Nick Ambrose Wins Scholar-Athlete Award; Vaughan Sealey Earns Scholarships
Two Staples seniors were honored at last night’s 19th annual Scholar-Athlete banquet.
Nick Ambrose was feted as the boys soccer team’s Scholar-Athlete. There is one from each of the 36 varsity sports. Ambrose was selected for having the highest GPA among all the seniors on the squad.
Every honoree is asked one question, based on his or her academics, extracurricular or sports interest. Head coach Dan Woog asked Ambrose about his role as a “quiet leader.” The 2018 co-captain noted that there are many ways to lead, and cited the strong bonds he helped create among all the players.
Sealey received 2 scholarships: $15,000 from the Coleman Brothers Foundation, and $3,000 from the Loeffler Fund.
The Coleman Brothers Foundation honors the memory of Scott Coleman — a former Staples soccer player — and his brother Keith, a wrestler. Both were killed on the same floor of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The annual award is funded by the Coleman family and the Westport Soccer Association, in part through the WIN Tournament.
The Loeffler Scholarship honors Albie Loeffler, the founder of the Staples High School soccer program. Loeffler also coached basketball, baseball and track at Staples. It is funded entirely by alumni donations, at the annual Turkey Bowl game and throughout the year. For more information or to contribute, click here.
Congratulations, Nick and Vaughan!
