Wreckers Announce 2020 Varsity Schedule

The FCIAC has announced a revised schedule for the 2020 season. This replaces the previous version, taking into account the later start date for conditioning and training.

The 16-team league has lost Trinity Catholic, which closed. But with the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference mandating “regional” competition, Fairfield Prep and Wright Tech-Stamford have been added to the conference, while Bassick and Harding (both in Bridgeport) have rejoined the FCIAC. Their traditional opponents are too far away to play in regional format. The additions are for this year only.

The league is further divided into 3 groups. Teams play opponents only within that group, in a home-and-home, back-to-back format. That lessens the chance that if one team must quarantine because of COVID, many others will also be affected. Except for opening day, all matches are on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Staples is in the Central Division, with Norwalk, Brien McMahon, Wilton, Danbury and Ridgefield. The Western Division includes Greenwich, Stamford, Westhill, Wright Tech, Darien and New Canaan. The Eastern Division is made up of Fairfield Ludlowe, Fairfield Warde, Fairfield Prep, Bridgeport Central, Harding, Bassick, Trumbull and St. Joseph.

After the 10 league games, there will be a 2 to 3 game post-season tournament, within each division. The format has not yet been decided.

The schedule could still be adjusted, based on impact of the coronavirus. In addition, reserve and freshman matches will be played on Saturdays only. That schedule has not yet been released.

Scrimmages may only be played within the regional group. The Wreckers will face Norwalk on Saturday, September 26 at 3 p.m., in their only pre-season scrimmage.

They open the regular season on Friday, October 2, hosting Danbury. The rest of the schedule:

  • Oct. 5: Staples @ Danbury
  • Oct. 7: Staples @ Wilton
  • Oct. 12: Wilton @ Staples
  • Oct. 14: Staples @ Ridgefield
  • Oct. 19: Ridgefield @ Staples
  • Oct. 21: Staples @ Brien McMahon
  • Oct. 26: Brien McMahon @ Staples
  • Oct. 28: Staples @ Norwalk
  • Nov. 2: Norwalk @ Staples

Spectators will not be allowed at Staples home games. The Wreckers are making plans to livestream all contests.
