0Wreckers Weather Wethersfield Jamboree
This year marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11. It’s also the 19th year for Wethersfield High School’s Winton, Keane, Bittner Memorial Soccer Jamboree.
Each year, the Eagles honor those 3 players lost that tragic day. They also graciously include Scott Coleman, the former Staples Wrecker killed in the World Trade Center.
All of today’s players were born after the terrorist attack. But they appreciated the pre-game speeches, and listened intently as Staples head coach Dan Woog described the events — and talked about Coleman, who he coached.
As always, the competition provided a good tune-up for the season ahead.
The Wreckers used primarily newcomers in their first 2 matches, a 1-0 loss to Tolland and 1-1 draw with Kingswood-Oxford (goal by Dylan Hoke, assisted by Aidan Mermagen). The final game was an intense 0-0 draw with host Wethersfield.
Staples now prepares for its regular season opener. They host Ridgefield this Friday (September 10), 4 p.m., at Loeffler Field.
