“Wreckers” Win WIN U-19 Tournament

A self-organized, self-coached team of varsity and reserve players — plus 2 current seniors who played in the past — cruised to the championship of the Westport Soccer Association’s annual WIN Tournament on Saturday.

They won their 3 round-robin matches, then gritted out a 4-2 victory in the semifinal against a tough Stamford foe. They romped in the final, 6-0 over Dynamo from Prospect.

The team included graduating senior varsity players Thomas Corridon — back on the field for the first time, following 2 years away with back and ACL injuries — Brewster Galley, tri-captain Bruno Guiduli, Jacob Greenberger, Aidan Mermagen and Jaden Mueller; sophomores Avery Mueller (varsity) and Santi Alfageme (reserves), and seniors and former players Jesse Sanchez and Ben Tanen.

The tournament raises funds for the Coleman Brothers Foundation, in honor of former Staples player Scott Coleman and his brother Keith. Both were killed in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.
