0Wreckers Show Well In Wethersfield
Staples soccer graduated 18 seniors last June. Wethersfield said goodbye to 19.
The Wreckers are a young team. Only 1 senior started against the host Eagles, at today’s jamboree. But the upstaters are even younger: Only 1 returnee has varsity experience.
Staples controlled possession, and dictated the tempo, in the 30-minute match against defending state L (large schools) champion Wethersfield. The blue-and-whites struck just 2:30 in, when Avery Mueller found fellow junior Lucas Carpi for a well-positioned tap-in 2 yards from goal. The same duo combined again late, in the 2-0 victory.
Cole Lieberman made his first start for the Wreckers, after missing a few days with illness.
The Wethersfield contest was bracketed by a pair of 0-0 draws, against Kingswood-Oxford and Tolland.
It was the final pre-season tune-up for Staples. They open the season Thursday at 4 p.m., at Ridgefield’s Tiger Hollow. The home opener is 2 days later: 10 a.m. at Loeffler Field, versus New Canaan.
QUICK KICKS: The Wethersfield Jamboree began in 2002, in honor of 3 former Eagles killed on 9/11. Each year, the pre-game ceremony also includes a tribute to Scott Coleman, a former Staples and Colgate University player also lost that day.
