0Wreckers, Prep Tie In Crazy Pre-season Match
For teams that don’t play each other often, Staples-Fairfield Prep matches are often memorable affairs.
Two years ago, the Wreckers shredded the Jesuits 6-0 in a pre-season scrimmage. Less than 2 months later, Staples upset the higher-ranked Prepsters 1-0, in an intense state tournament quarterfinal contest.
Today’s pre-season affair started relatively quietly. Jonny Costello fed Avery Mueller for a crisp, straight-ahead 6th-minute strike.
But the hosts drew level at Rafferty Field with only 16 seconds remaining before halftime.
In the second half Mueller drove into the box, drew a penalty kick, then converted it. Once again Prep tied it up.
Lucas Carpi’s no-angle blast gave the blue-and-whites what seemed like the game. But a late penalty kick allowed the Jesuits to tie the score, for the third time.
Moments later, Mueller again appeared to be fouled in the box. One official signaled for a PK. With the clock stopped with 4 seconds remaining, the co-captain prepared to take it.
But the second referee overruled his partner. And that was that.
Staples returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, September 2, 10 a.m.) at the Wethersfield Jamboree. As always, 3 former Eagles who were killed on 9/11 will be honored; so will former Staples soccer player Scott Coleman, who also lost his life in the terrorist attack.
