Match Report: Staples vs. Wilton [UPDATED WITH PHOTOS]

Tuesday’s match against Greenwich was one of the most memorable in Staples boys soccer history.

This afternoon’s with Wilton was one of the most forgettable.

Just 48 hours after that emotional 4-3 loss, the Wreckers rode a pair of first half goals to a workmanlike 2-0 victory. It would have been easy for a letdown, against a middle-of-the-pack foe. But the home team went right back to work, picking up their 5th win in 7 tries. Today also marked the midpoint in the 16-game regular season.

There is now a welcome breather in the jam-packed schedule. Staples is off for 6 days, until next Wednesday at Bridgeport Central (4 p.m.).

The blue-and-whites were without 2 key players. Brendan Allen and Lucas Alarcon were unavailable, having been red carded in the previous match.

Mikey Brennan made the most of his start, helping with early pressure. Warrior keeper Tristen Albright had a busy day, with Gabe Duque bedeviling his defender on the left side, Josh Whitaker doing the same on the right, and Greyson Downes sending attackers through. Ford Epstein had another strong match, on both sides of the ball.

In the 20th minute Noah Rossoni picked up a loose ball, and fired in the first goal from close range.

Ten minutes later, a nifty move by Whitaker created chaos in the box. Adrian Rodriguez snagged another loose ball, and finished cleanly.

That was all the scoring. The second half saw plenty of time for the reserves. Sophomore Jaden Waldman looked particularly strong, winning several challenges and keeping possession well.

FINAL SCORE: Staples 2, Wilton 0. FCIAC RECORD: 5-2-0. OVERALL RECORD: 6-2-0.

QUICK KICKS: The junior varsity shut out Wilton 3-0. Spencer Cammeyer, Mateo Riera and Loewe Epstein scored, with assists from Kai Massicott and Ciaran Kennedy ….

Coach Luis Mandujan’s freshman cruised to a 4-1 in over Wilton. Balanced scoring came from Gus Reyna, John Walker, Beckham Martino and Reid Kahn.
