State Tournament Bracket Set: Staples vs. Trumbull, Friday At 2 PM!
Last night, Staples soccer celebrated the 28th FCIAC title in the program’s 67-year history.
Today, they turn their attention to the “LL” (extra large schools) tournament.
On Friday, they begin their 5-game quest for the Wreckers’ 13th state crown.
Seedings are done strictly by regular season record. When points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw) are even, and there is no common opponent, a formula using opponents’ won/tied ranking is used.
The 14-2-0 Stapleites are seeded 4th. That sets up a 1st-round matchup against #29 Trumbull. The game is this Friday, 2 p.m. at Wakeman Field.
The Eagles (5-8-3) were the final team to qualify (.400 win/tied percentage; theirs is .406). The 3 teams — #1 15-0-0 Naugatuck, #2 15-0-0 Greenwich, and #3 13-0-3 Farmington — all receive byes, in the round of 32.
Besides Staples, other FCIAC teams to qualify for the LL tourney are #8 Stamford, #12 Ridgefield, #13 Darien, #20 Norwalk, #21 Danbury, #24 Fairfield Warde, and #25 Brien McMahon.
Wilton is #24 in the “L” (large schools) tournament. Weston, which plays in the SWC league, is seeded 1st in the “M” (medium size schools) division, with a 14-2-0 mark.
