Staples vs. Glastonbury (Pre-Season Scrimmage)

For decades, Glastonbury has been a Connecticut powerhouse — and for nearly as long, the Wreckers have considered them great rivals.

A day after playing their opening game of the season, the Tomahawks came to Westport for a scrimmage.  Staples was grateful for the opportunity for a final tuneup before Friday’s season opener vs. St. Joseph.

It was a tuneup the Wreckers needed.  Though the home side scored first — Lorenz Esposito striking home Steve Smith’s rifle of a corner kick — the upstaters surged into a 2-1 lead before halftime.  One tally came off a ball from the corner; the 2nd, on a quick counterattack.

Glastonbury added 2 more goals, before the blue-and-whites came back.  Terence Gibbons knocked in Diego Alanis’ corner kick; Alanis then finished a pass from Terence Gibbons.

It was a great comeback — and the Wreckers nearly got 1 more, on a couple of close-in chances.

But for much of the match, the Tomahawks were the better, faster, stronger side.  They showed Staples what they’ll be up against this year — and when it was over, the Wreckers vowed they’d be ready for a rematch.
