Several snow-induced delays did not stop the Staples indoor track juggernaut.
With a quartet of soccer players providing key points, the Wreckers edged archrival Danbury 78-76 to win the state LL championship.
Days later, the Westporters’ 40 points earned them 3rd at the state open meet. Bloomfield won, with 61 points. The Hatters (53.5) were 2nd.
The LL title was keyed by Ethan Bradeen (2nd, high jump, 5-10), and Ryan Petersen and Jack Scott (3rd, sprint medley relay, 3:42.21.
Scott was also part of the 4th-place 4×400 relay team (3:31.86), while he and Petersen helped the 4×200 quartet to 7th (1:36.82).
Bobby Jacowleff was 4th in the 55 hurdles (8.22).
The state open meet featured Scott in both the 1600 sprint medley (4th, 3:44.78) and 4×400 (6th, 3:31.56). Bradeen placed 16th in the high jump (5-10).
Congratulations to the entire Staples indoor track team, and coaches Laddie Lawrence and Malcolm Watson, for their outstanding success this winter.
