0Brian Wolgast Helps Golf Team To FCIAC Title
Junior Brian Wolgast — who played in only 8 varsity matches this year — fired a 78 in the FCIAC boys golf championship yesterday.
His strong play helped the Wreckers to a 5-stroke (294-299) edge over Greenwich — and their 1st league championship in 21 years. It was also the 1st FCIAC title for longtime coach Tom Owen.
The championship, at Fairchild Wheeler in Fairfield, capped Staples’ 17-1-1 regular season. The Westporters’ lone tie came against Greenwich. The Cardinals were defending FCIAC titlists, along with Wilton. Both squads edged Staples last year by 1 stroke.
Wolgast and his teammates begin their defense of Staples’ Division I state title on Monday at Crestbrook in Waterbury. Once again, they’ll meet Greenwich.
