Colin Corneck Earns Full ROTC Scholarship

Colin Corneck has served the Staples High School boys soccer program well.

Now  he’s getting ready to serve his country.

The senior defender and defending Cooper test champion (he ran the 2 miles in 11:33) — who is also Staples’ 2019-20 boys swim team captain, and competes on the golf team — has earned a coveted Navy ROTC scholarship.

After a highly competitive national process, Colin has been awarded 4 years’ full tuition, books, fees and other financial benefits. In addition to a normal course load, NROTC recipients take several naval science courses while in college.

Upon graduation, NROTC members are commissioned as officers: ensigns in the Naval Reserve, or 2nd lieutenants in the Marine Corps  Reserve. They must then serve at least 3 years of active duty.

Meanwhile, Colin is also applying to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. He finishes his final interviews with Connecticut’s senate and congressional staffs this week.

Colin has a very impressive resume. The latest addition: Next week (Monday, November 11, 11 a.m., Town Hall), he delivers the address at Westport’s official Veterans Day ceremony.

If he is accepted at Annapolis, Colin will follow in the footsteps of Sean Gallagher ’10. Another Staples soccer grad — Thomas Heisler — currently attends the Air Force Academy in Colorado  Springs.

Colin Corneck crushes the Cooper test.
