Gabe Pensak Honored As Scholar-Athlete; Denzel Robinson Wins 3 Scholarships

Two graduating Staples soccer players had big nights Sunday.

Gabe Pensak was honored as the boys team’s Scholar-Athlete, at the 15th annual schoolwide banquet held at the Westport Inn.

Each team selects one honoree; each answers 1 question from his or her coach. Pensak — who had the 2014 squad’s highest GPA — was asked about the importance of playing high school soccer, as opposed to the academy. He discussed the value for him of playing with friends, competing at a high level, and making lifelong memories.

Robinson, meanwhile, was awarded 3 prestigious scholarships. The University of Rhode Island-bound senior received 2 for soccer: a $10,000 Coleman Brothers Foundation grant, given by the Westport Soccer Association, and the $3,000 Albie Loeffler Scholarship, honoring the founder of the Staples program. Robinson also received a $5,000 grant named for Laddie Lawrence, for his track accomplishments. Last year, at the Staples soccer banquet, Robinson received the $5,000 Dan Woog Dedication Award, sponsored by the Top of the Hill Team and Gudis Family Foundation.

A large contingent from the WSA was on hand, including Todd Coleman ’84 and Andy Udell ’88.

Congratulations to Gabe and Denzel, for a great evening!
