Girls Lacrosse Team To Honor Preston Hirten ’07

The Staples girls lacrosse team will remember Preston Hirten ’07 at their final regular season game (May 22)  The ceremony and game will take place on the Staples football field at 11:45 a.m. — please note the new site and time.

Preston’s sister Ella is a junior on the squad.

The idea came from tri-captains Kat Krieger, Lexa Koenig and Blair Barone.  Both Kat and Lexa have brothers on Staples’ freshman team.

Each captain will speak before the game.  During the match, the Wreckers will wear white ribbons in their hair — to symbolize spirit and life.

“I think I’ll try my best to stay strong for Ella and everyone,” Kattold Westport Patch.

“It’s not supposed to be going backward for a tragedy.  It’s just supposed to honor what he stood for, all the positive things, like how he was such a hard worker, and everything good he stood for on his soccer team and in the community.

“He was always smiling, always encouraging to his teammates,” Kat said.  “It was a great thing to watch.  You couldn’t go to a game and not know who he was.  He would do things that would make you want to talk about him after.”

Girls lacrosse coach Cathy Schager called the captains’ idea “extremely meaningful.  Preston was always an important part of this community.  Ella’s an important part of our team, and we wanted to do as much as we can to support the whole family.”

The Staples girls lacrosse team recently celebrated Senior Day.
