0Luca Cocito, Shane Dasbach, Griff O’Neill Earn Honors
Each year, the Scholar-Athlete banquet honors 1 athlete from each of Staples’ 37 varsity sports.
But last night at the Westport Inn, 3 Wrecker soccer players earned kudos.
Luca Cocito was the booters’ actual Scholar-Athlete. He was cited for his 4.0 GPA, and — along with the other 36 honorees — faced the audience of 200 guests, and answered one question from his coach. Dan Woog noted that Cocito had arrived in the US from Brazil in 8th grade unable to speak a word of English — yet succeeded superbly in the classroom. How did he do it?
Cocito responded that he worked several hours a day, mastering the language and his classes. (Google Translate helped.) He also praised his soccer teammates — who became, and still are, his best friends.
Shane Dasbach and Griff O’Neill were also honored. Each received a $1,500 Albie Loeffler scholarship (for Carnegie Mellon University and Providence College, respectively). The grants are named for the founder of the Staples soccer program, and are funded by contributions and donations during events like the Turkey Bowl. For more information, click here.
