Match Report: Staples vs. Trumbull

Trumbull — always a tough, physical team — this year boasts a strong spine of talented players.

They’ve also got an exceptionally long throw.

The Eagles’ assets were on display at Loeffler Field today. They had the run of play in the 1st 25 minutes, forcing keeper Ziggy Hallgarten into several key saves.

Slowly, the momentum started to shift. The Wreckers possessed more, and played better balls to feet. Halftime was devoted to a few tactical adjustments, and the hosts started the 2nd half with resolve.

Just 2:37 in, lightning from a fast-moving storm halted play. Both teams headed to the cafeteria.

Lightning continued past 5:20 p.m., along with a brief downpour. Teams had to remain inside for 30 minutes after the last strike.

The referees called the match, due to field conditions and radar that showed more rain coming through. Because the 2nd half had begun, the match is official — a 0-0 draw.

The Wreckers hope to play a full 80 minutes in their 1st road contest of the FCIAC season on Friday. This will be the 1st visit to Stamford High for everyone currently on varsity. FINAL SCORE: 0-0. SEASON RECORD: 1-1-1.
