Match Report: Staples vs. Westhill
Six weeks ago, during the Norwalk Summer League quarterfinals, Westhill stunned Staples with a 1-0 penalty kick win.
Today at Wakeman Field, the stakes were far higher: an FCIAC match.
The result was quite different. Seven different Wreckers scored, en route to a decisive 10-0 win.
The win raises Staples’ record to 3-0-0. Their toughest test of the young season comes Saturday, at undefeated Trumbull. Kickoff is 11:15 a.m.
Westhill showed an extremely high line at the start today. The Wreckers were called for 2 quick offsides; one nullified a goal.
But they got their timing. They mixed balls over the top and through, on the ground. They harassed the visitors’ backs, so the defensive maneuver broke down.
The first goal came 9 minutes in. Adrian Rodriguez slotted a ball to Alex Saleeb, who finished solidly.
Ten minutes later, Lucas Alarcon sent Rodriguez through. He took one touch, then launched the second goal.
Rodriguez buried a penalty kick 1 minute later, after Arthur Khisyamov was fouled making a good run.
The floodgates opened in the second half. In the 45th minute Jaden Waldman juked his way through a crowd, before striking authoritatively. He got a brace a minute after that, low and hard off a feed from Greyson Downes.
Ethan Katzner made it 6-0, assisted by Kai Massicott. Downes nailed a PK. The final goals came from Rodriguez Nico Rossoni (from Dutch Schlegelmilch), and Rossoni.
Luke Diedrich got the clean sheet in goal for Staples, with help in the final 10 minutes from Harrison Waller. FINAL SCORE: Staples 10, Westhill 0. SEASON RECORD: 3-0-0.
QUICK KICKS: The junior varsity shut out Westhill 6-0. Massimo Ferrari had a hat trick, including a free kick. Kailan Spadea, Max McDermott and Spencer Hollander all added solo tallies….
The freshmen fell 2-1 to Westhill. Aaron Lewitton got the Wreckers’ lone goal.
