Meet Steve McCoy ’71: Friday’s Livestream Guest Announcer

In addition to WWPT-FM’s ace announcing tandem of Jake Gersh and Cam Manna, this Friday’s regular season-opening livestream features guest announcer Steve McCoy. (Click here for the livestream.)

Known as “Diller,” he co-captained the legendary 1970 Staples soccer team, which finished 16-1-1.

That squad was the first in Staples history to capture the “double”: an FCIAC title and state championship. They were the first to repeat as state champions, and the first and only squad in Staples history to go the entire season without being scored on by a Connecticut team. Their only loss was 2-1, to a powerhouse Nyack, New York side.

The Wreckers’ 16 consecutive shutouts were a national record at the time. The final shutout was a 0-0 tie with Conard in the state Class “L” final — at the time, the largest school category.

The ’70 team featured an all-senior starting lineup. Remarkably, 10 of the 11 went on to captain their varsity college teams.

McCoy was one of those 10. At Duke University he earned All-South and All-ACC honors, and was selected to play in college soccer’s Senior Bowl. His 35 goals put him 3rd on the Blue Devils’ career scoring list at the time of his graduation, in 1975.

After college Steve attended Duke Medical School. He specialized in orthopedics, and practiced in Litchfield for many years. Now retired, he and his wife Sher split their time between Litchfield and North Carolina.  They have 3 grown children.

Livestreams this season are sponsored by alumni from the classes of 1969, 1970, 1981, 1982 — with more to come — plus individuals, and the Top of the Hill Team.
