Obituary: Frank Henrick
Frank Henrick — who in his 1 year as interim head coach won a state soccer championship — died last month in Florida. He was 88, and had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
Henrick filled in during the 1969 season when Albie Loeffler, the Staples boys soccer program’s founder, was on sabbatical leave to study at the University of Bridgeport. He led the Wreckers to a 17-1-0 record, and the state title with a 2-0 win over Hartford Public. The team’s lone loss was to Brien McMahon, 1-0 in the FCIAC championship.
That title began a remarkable streak of 5 straight state championships for the Staples boys soccer team. That run remains a Connecticut record.
Twenty years later, Henrick coached another state championship team: Staples’ girls soccer.
With the boys team, he also served as junior varsity and intermediate (11th grade) coach. He was Staples’ head baseball coach for several years.
