Pairings Set For FCIAC Tournament

Staples’ 2-0 loss to Fairfield Warde yesterday — coupled with other final-day FCIAC results — prevented what could have been a 3-way tie for the final league playoff spot.

Greenwich tied Brien McMahon 2-2. The Cards finish the regular season 13-0-3, and earn the top seed. They host the Wreckers Thursday, at 3:30 p.m. Staples and Greenwich deadlocked 0-0 earlier this month. Staples and Stamford both had the same number of points, but the Black Knights got the #7 spot over the Wreckers based on their 1-0 victory in September. The match will be livestreamed by WWPT-FM. Trumbull rallied from a 2-0 deficit against Stamford, with 3 goals in the final 11 minutes. The game-winner came with 32 seconds remaining. They’re booked for a rematch, Friday at 4 p.m. — the #7 Black Knights against the #2 Eagles in Trumbull

Danbury and Fairfield Ludlowe drew 1-1. They’ve got a rematch too. The #3 Hatters host the #6 Tigers on Thursday (3:30 p.m.)

The 4th quarterfinal pits #5 Fairfield Warde against #4 and host Darien, also Thursday at 3:30. The Blue Wave beat Central 5-3.

Here’s how Staples — vying for its 28th FCIAC championship in 58 years — did against the other playoff contenders:

Tied Greenwich 0-0
Tied Trumbull 0-0
Lost to Danbury 2-1
Tied Darien 0-0
Lost to Fairfield Warde 2-0
Beat Fairfield Ludlowe 2-0
Lost to Stamford 1-0
