Quiz Night Is Virtually Here

Quiz Night is one of Staples soccer’s most anticipated events of the year.

Every year since 2005, dozens of players, parents, relatives, friends and random others have gathered in the cafeteria. They compete in 6 rounds of trivia, win raffle prizes, and eat.

It’s enormously fun — and a crucial fundraiser. Money raised helps pay for coaches’ stipends, field maintenance, video, the banquet, the winter program, scholarships, and much more. Varsity, reserves and freshmen — all benefit.

COVID has knocked this year’s Quiz Night into cyberspace. But — thanks to a crew of hard-working, creative parents — the event will be just as much fun. It’s set for Friday, October 23, 7 p.m., at a computer near you.

As always, contestants form teams. It’s smart to combine ages (kids and adults), with a wide variety of interests (history, geography, pop culture, math, science, sports, entertainment, etc.). Teachers, grandparents and crossword puzzle solvers do particularly well. Of course, many Staples soccer players like forming their own teams. Each team can have up to 8 participants.

At 7 p.m. next Friday, everyone will log in to a link sent to all who have registered. This year, quizmaster Dan Woog has prepared multiple-choice questions. There will be a tight time limit on each questions: 10 to 15 seconds for an answer. Points are awarded for correct answers — and speed counts!

The traditional raffle will be held too. There are (as always) great prizes, including gift cards, Staples swag and more.

The Staples soccer program elected not to solicit local businesses for prizes or auction items this year. Too many local stores and restaurants are suffering. Families have not been asked to donate items either. Instead, a donation page for money has been set up, to augment the Quiz Night proceeds.

As for food, 2 restaurants — Julian’s and Match Burger Lobster — are offering special deals for pick-up that night. See details below.

Head coach Dan Woog says, “The committee has put together an amazing event. Now I hope everyone follows a few simple instructions to make this the most memorable Quiz Night yet.”

  • Form a team (up to 8 contestants – soccer players, your friends, relatives, neighbors, teachers). Each Quiz Night team needs a captain. Captain must send an email with team name, captain’s name, and every team member’s name and email to Brett Adams (btddas@yahoo.com) by Tuesday, October 20!
  • Each player is asked to sell at least 4 tickets (only $10 each)! They do this by asking parents, grandparents, relatives, neighbors, etc. to form a team. Anyone wishing to form a team on their own should send ticket money by Venmo (@StaplesBoysSoccer) or check (“Staples Boys Soccer,” c/o Joanna Douglas, 4 Salem Road, Westport, CT 06880).
  • Raffle tickets ($2 each): Venmo @StaplesBoysSoccer by Wednesday; include number of tickets, name, and if on varsity, reserve or freshman team. They can also be purchased before Saturday’s reserve and freshman games, and next week’s varsity games, by cash or check from Lori Pulichino.
  • Julian’s Ristorante offers a 15% discount for all takeout meals ordered on Quiz Night. Call 203-955-4466 or click here. Match Burger Lobster has two special burger-and-lobster deals: $49 for 2 people, $99 for 4. Call 203-557-8800, or click here.
