Registration Deadline Extended For STA Pre-Season Camp

Though Connecticut schools are closed at least through May 20, dozens of Staples High soccer players are working out on their own. They eagerly anticipate the fall season.

Decisions about the fall will be made by organizations like the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference; those involving field use for the summer will come from entities like the Westport Parks & Recreation Department, all based on federal, state and local guidelines. At this point, head coach Dan Woog says, “the best thing everyone can do is to follow all the rules for distancing, masks and everything else. The sooner we can flatten the curve, the sooner we can start opening things back up.

STA director Brian Kuk is keeping registration open for the popular preseason camp, with no “late registration” fees.

“We understand the entire situation,” says Kuk, entering his 18th year of the Staples-STA partnership. “Along with everyone else, we will be very flexible.”

The camp for players who are trying out for the varsity team runs from Wednesday, August 19 through Sunday, August 23. There are 2 sessions each day, all at Wakeman. (NOTE: Official tryouts begin Thursday, August 27.)

The camp for incoming 9th graders will be held Saturday, August 15 through Tuesday, August 18. There are 2 sessions each day, all at Wakeman. (NOTE: Official tryouts begin Thursday, August 27.)

Brian Kuk, Brian Chandler, Dominic Willock and goalkeeper coach Kevin Cash will once again work their magic. The Brians are stoked by what they’ve heard about the tremendous attitude of the returning players, and are excited to help the Wreckers prepare for the season ahead.
