Rosters Set For 3 Wrecker Teams

Cuts have been made. Rosters have been announced. The 2024 Staples boys soccer season is roaring ahed.

Varsity coach Russell Oost-Lievense is keeping 31 players, though 3 returnees — seniors Zac Belzer, Elliot Galin and Ryan Sunjka — are out for the year, with injuries.

The squad is led by captains Zach Beebe and Sam Rossoni. All 16 seniors have come up through the Staples program except Will Murray, who played with the MLS Next academy system. Cormac Mulvey will wear the coveted #15 jersey, in honor of Preston Hirtin ’07.

There are also 9 juniors on varsity, plus 6 sophomores. Among the 10th graders: Nico Reyna Henriquez, who grew up in Venezuela but moved to Westport from Ireland.

Junior varsity coach Elisee Joseph has a team of 22, while freshman coach Chris O’Dell is keeping 31 9th graders.

As always, there may be movement during the season. JV and freshman players may be called up, while varsity 10th and 11th graders may keep sharp by playing with the JVs.

September 4 is the season opener for the 3 teams. Varsity and JV are home vs. New Canaan (Wakeman turf and Wakeman E, respectively), while the frosh travel to Saxe Middle School to take on the Rams. Kickoff for all the 3 matches is 4 p.m.
