Soccer Players Help Indoor Track To State Open Title

The Staples boys indoor track team made it a 3-fer yesterday — and they couldn’t have done it without Staples soccer players.

The Wreckers added the state open championship to their previous state LL and FCIAC titles. Staples’ 47 points easily outdistanced host Hillhouse (34), Greenwich (31), Trumbull (26) and Danbury (23). Last year, the blue-and-whites finished 2nd, behind the Hatters.

This is the Wreckers’ 1st state open crown since 1991.

Three soccer players were on 2 winning relay teams. Max Hoberman and Walker Marsh comprised half of the 4×400 squad (3:26.44), while David Hoffman helped the 1600 sprint medley team to victory (3:38.93).

Hoberman and Hoffman also ran in the 4th-place 4×200 race (1:34.12). Marsh and Kyle Hoberman were members of the 4th-place 4×800 squad (8:12.33).

In addition, Max Hoberman competed in the long jump, and  Ethan Bradeen in the high jump.

Congratulations to coach Laddie Lawrence, his assistants, and all the state open champion Wreckers!

One further note: Max Hoberman and Kyle Hoberman served as 2 of the team’s 4 captains this winter.
