Staples-Fairfield Prep: Pre-Season Scrimmage Report

The Staples boys soccer team opened their pre-season schedule today against Fairfield Prep.

While Loeffler Field was in superb shape, the Wreckers’ performance was ragged. They drew 1st blood 5 minutes in, when Gabe Pensak launched himself to meet Graham Gudis’ free kick from the corner. Pensak’s diving header was his 1st-ever goal at Staples.

The Jesuits drew level off an uncleared corner kick.

The hosts edged ahead when Nate Argosh nodded on Kenji Goto’s ball. Daniel Perez Elorza raced forward, finishing strongly. But once again Prep evened the score, this time on a soft rebound.

Staples’ coaches found plenty to work on in the coming days, from communication and defensive organization to team shape at crucial moments.

The Wreckers are back in action Friday, at perennial prep school powerhouse South Kent (3 p.m.). On Sunday, defending New York City champion Martin Luther King comes to Loeffler Field, for a 1 p.m. contest.

Steven Sobel — a member of the 2013 varsity team — makes his presence (and player preference) known at today’s pre-season match.
