Staples vs. Glastonbury and Naugatuck (scrimmages)

The Wreckers traveled to Glastonbury for a pair of 45-minute scrimmages today.

In the 1st run, against Naugatuck, Staples fielded 9 players new to the varsity this year.  Though on the defensive for long stretches, the Westporters stood up well versus the Greyhounds’ 1st team.  The match ended 0-0 — thanks in part to freshman keeper James Hickok’s fine tip save on a looping shot.

The 2nd game was a rematch of last fall’s state “LL” semifinal.  This time the Wreckers prevailed.  Midway through, defender Mikey Fitzgerald headed in Mikey Scott’s long throw.

“We enjoy playing a well-organized team like Glastonbury,” said Staples head coach Dan Woog.  “The field was big, and we got a chance to work on the defensive principles we’ve introduced in training.  We’re continuing to look at formations and combinations, and we saw some good things today.”
