Watermelon Cup

The Watermelon Cup began in the 1960s. Staples players, and alumni in college, competed in a summer league at Staples. College players were captains, and named their summer teams after the schools they played for. The league was sponsored by Westport’s Parks & Recreation Commission.

It faded in the 1980s. But the Watermelon Cup was revived in 2006, by head coach Dan Woog and assistant coach Kurt Dasbach. They organized a one-day event at Compo Beach, immediately following the World Cup final match.

The next year, the Watermelon Cup began as a 6- or 7-week summer league, for current players, alumni, and anyone else who wanted to play. The league was based at Long Lots Elementary School’s 3 fields, then moved to its current home at Wakeman Field.

Sixty years later, the winning team still gets the traditional prize: watermelon.
