Wreckers Announce 2018 Schedule
Four Saturday home matches — including a special 60th anniversary celebration — highlight Staples boys soccer’s 2018 schedule.
Darien provides the opposition for that 60th match. It’s set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 13. There’s a tailgate before, pick-up games on Loeffler Field for alumni (and their kids) after, and a great alumni party at Dan Donovan ’82’s house that night.
Opening day is also a Saturday. For the first time in many years, the Wreckers kick off on a weekend: September 8, home against Fairfield Warde (3 p.m.). Four days later the blue-and-whites host another tough foe: Danbury.
There are other tough stretches throughout, including 5 straight matches against Westhill, Stamford, Ridgefield, Darien and Fairfield Ludlowe.
The other Saturday foes are Norwalk (away, September 29, 6 p.m.) and New Canaan (home, October 20).
Other home opponents include Trumbull, Central, Brien McMahon, Westhill and Ridgefield.
Pre-season features 4 excellent opponents, all away: Fairfield Prep (Tuesday, August 28); Joel Barlow (Thursday, August 30); the Wethersfield jamboree (Saturday, September 1) and Martin Luther King (Labor Day, Monday, September 3).
New this year: Home teams will wear color jerseys; away teams will wear white. The rule change was made at the national level, after requests from a number of schools to be able to show off their colors before home crowds.
Also on tap this fall: the fundraising car wash (Saturday, September 22) and Quiz Night (Friday, October 19).
