Wreckers Compete In Wethersfield; Season Opener Is Friday

Brendan Allen’s 25-yard shot put Staples up 1-0 on Tolland in the opening match Saturday, at Wethersfield High School’s annual jamboree. The upstaters tied the 30-minute contest late, after a defensive mis-clear.

The Wreckers then drew 0-0 against Kingswood-Oxford.

In the final game — playing most of their starters for the first time — Staples fell 1-0 to their hosts. Several potential starters were rested at the event, to recover from nagging injuries.

The jamboree honors 3 former Wethersfield High players who were killed on 9/11. It also pays tribute to Scott Coleman, a former Wrecker killed that day at the World Trade Center.

The Staples varsity — filled with returnees from last year’s squad, after the graduation of only 8 players — opens their season this Friday. They host Ridgefield at Wakeman Field. Kickoff is 4 p.m.

The junior varsity will be in action too, on nearby Wakeman E, while the freshmen travel to Ridgefield.
