0Wreckers Continue Pre-Season With Prep
The last time Staples and Fairfield Prep met was last November. It was the first-ever “official” match between the schools, longtime state LL rivals whose campuses are just a few miles apart.
The Wreckers won that state tournament quarterfinal match 1-0, in a thrilling battle.
But Staples and Prep are longtime preseason opponents. They continued that tradition yesterday, at Wakeman. The match was moved from Fairfield, where Rafferty Stadium is undergoing turf maintenance.
Both sides play possession, skillful soccer. The hosts got on the scoreboard first, when Lucas Carpi finished clinically off a feed from Emmett Nivaud. Two more goals were disallowed, for offside and a foul in the box. Prep evened the score on a late strike.
The Wreckers were without 3 possible starters, due to injury or illness, while the Jesuits’ 2 captains did not play.
Staples is in action again tomorrow, at the annual Wethersfield jamboree. The event honors 3 Eagle players lost on September 11, 2001; the brief 10 a.m. ceremony also includes Scott Coleman, a former Wrecker killed that day. The Wreckers play 3 30-minute matches: 11 a.m. vs. Wethersfield, then 12:15 and 1:30 against Tolland and Kingswood-Oxford.
The first regular season match is next Thursday, at 4 p.m. in Ridgefield.
