Wreckers Do Pushups; Raise $23,000 For Hole In Wall Gang Camp

Staples soccer players know they are very lucky. They’ve been given a lot.

Today, they gave back.

The Wreckers participated in the 12th annual “Push Against Cancer.” With 300 other people of all ages (and body types), they did pushups at Jinny Parker Field.

In return, they solicited donations for the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp — the wonderful retreat, founded by Westport’s own Paul Newman, that offers fun and freedom for children suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

And solicit they did. The 3 boys teams — varsity, reserves and freshmen — donated $23,689 to the cause. That will send nearly 10 youngsters to camp, for a week.

Gavin Gravelle led all fundraisers, with $2,901. Also among the top players (at least $1,000 dollars raised, if not in pushups done): Andre Albanese, Sebi Cruz, Jack Foster, Sam Rossoni and Jack Schwartz.

The Staples girls soccer program has participated for many years. They just edged the boys in dollars pledged, with $24,276.

Congratulations and thanks to both programs. The sore arms tomorrow will be worth it, for dozens of young kids.

Staples varsity, reserves and freshmen team get ready to bang out pushups.
