Wreckers End Pre-Season With McMahon Scrimmage

A narrow field, slick with rain, made tonight’s scrimmage at Brien McMahon a less than noteworthy affair.

Staples showed only flashes of good ball movement, and continued to work to solidify defensively.

The Wreckers went up 1-0 when Alan Fiore and Haydn Siroka set up Reese Watkins’ tap-in, and Siroka then made it 2-0 off a keeper error.

But the Senators nailed a penalty kick — the 2nd in 2 matches surrendered by Staples — and in the 2nd half equalized off a driven corner kick. McMahon then took the lead, but the Westporters roared back with goals by Siroka (from Zach Pulichino), Jack Kuster, Ryan Thomas (penalty kick) and Pulichino.

The regular season begins Friday, with a 4 p.m. match at Loeffler Field against Danbury. Only parent spectators are allowed, but the game will be livestreamed (click here for the link). WWPT-FM’s Jake Gersh and Cameron Manna will be on the call — along with guest analyst Steve McCoy. He captained Staples’ 1970 FCIAC and state champion team — which allowed only 2 goals in the entire season — and went on to star at Duke University. Dr. McCoy recently retired from his medical orthopedic practice.
