Wreckers Open Preseason With Win

Just 5 days after their first tryout session, the 2022 Staples soccer team had their first preseason scrimmage. at Greens Farms Academy.

It was a chance for head coach Russell Oost-Lievense and his staff to see candidates in a match situation, before making roster decisions.

The match showed the squad where they are so far, and what they need to work on going forward. The team controlled possession and tempo, showing Oost-Lievense’s trademark confident passing and playing out of the back.

After 45 scoreless minutes, defender Campbell Gerrard opened the scoring with a close-in blast, off a corner kick. The Dragons tied the match, but a penalty kick by Jonny Costello and 2 late goals by Zach Gorin iced the match.

Staples continues its preseason schedule with a 4 p.m. contest on Thursday (September 1) against Fairfield Prep. The Jesuits’ turf may not be ready, so the match might be switched to Westport.

QUICK KICKS: This was the 2nd straight meeting between the 2 teams. Staples scrimmaged GFA last fall, in a tune-up before the state tournament.
