Wreckers Volunteer At WIN Tournament; U-16s Reach U-18 Finals

More than a dozen Staples soccer players volunteered this weekend at the 35th annual WIN tournament. They manned timers’ tables, worked as runners and served food. Several others officiated.

“The comments we’ve gotten about our guys are fantastic,” said head coach Dan Woog. “It’s an honor for us to do this, because proceeds from the tournament go to the Coleman Brothers Foundation. A lot of our guys have been helped by Coleman scholarships.” The foundation honors the memory of Scott and Keith Coleman, brothers who were killed on 9/11. Scott was a former Staples and WSA soccer player.

Meanwhile, on the Jinny Parker Field turf, Steve Baumann ’70 made his coaching debut with the WSA’s U-16 team. Playing up in the U-18 division, Westport went 2-1-0 in group play. The final — against Trumbull — featured plenty of solid team play by the locals. The Trumbull keeper saved a bullet from Griff O’Neill, and an audacious bicycle kick from Luca Cocito was saved only by a defender’s face.

The WSA regular season begins next month.
