Norwalk Hour Cites ‘Classy’ Staples Soccer Gesture
Hour sports editor Matt Doran heard about a small but telling incident involving the Staples boys soccer team after yesterday’s banquet.
Today he posted it on his “Hour Sports Minute” blog.
Matt wrote:
Think high school kids are clueless when it comes to thinking about the feelings of others? Well, think again.
The Staples High boys soccer team proved the contrary on Monday.
The Wreckers held their annual banquet this weekend to celebrate a spectacular season that included both an FCIAC title and the Class LL state championship.
Staples also went 22-2 overall, the most wins in the celebrated history of the program.
At the banquet, the Wreckers received state championship jackets. VERY nice ones. Jackets they were prepared to show off in school on Monday.
Then the Staples football team lost in the Class LL state championship game on Sunday, suffering a heart-breaking 28-21 overtimes setback against Cheshire.
The football team, which won the FCIAC title, finished 12-1 overall, missing out on their chance to complete a perfect season.
Out of respect for the football team, the Staples soccer players spread word not to wear the jackets to school on Monday.
It was kind of like a kid getting a new bike for Christmas then keeping it in the garage because his best friend didn’t get one himself.
“It was a very nice gesture,” said Dan Woog, the head coach of the Staples soccer team. “It came totally from them. They’re going to wear the jackets proudly, but they knew this wasn’t the right way to do it.”
No wonder why the Staples boys soccer team is considered one of the classiest outfits in the state.
