Watermelon Cup Kicks Off Wednesday, June 25

Right now, all eyes are on Brazil. But on Wednesday, June 25 the World Cup shares the stage with another big soccer event: the Watermelon Cup.

Westport’s traditional summer 6-v-6 league for high school- and college-age players, alumni, former players and friends kicks off at Long Lots. Each of the 6 teams plays 2 games a night (40 minutes each), through August 6. After the finals, the winners cut (and eat) the watermelon.

The Watermelon Cup was first played in the 1960s and ’70s. It was revived a decade ago, and has thrived ever since.

Rosters, schedules and standings are available on the StaplesSoccer.com Watermelon Cup page (under the “About the Wreckers” dropdown menu on the home page). Or you can just click here.

Let the games begin!
