Kyle Martino ’99 Featured In New England Soccer Journal
This month’s New England Soccer Journal features an in-depth story on Kyle Martino ’99.
The former Staples star — who was named Gatorade National Player of the Year as a senior; starred at the University of Virginia; earned MLS Rookie of the Year honors at Columbus; was David Beckham’s teammate in Los Angeles, and now earns raves as a studio analyst for NBC Sports’ Premier League broadcasts — talks about growing up in Westport. He fought his brothers (including Wes ’97) for the right to watch soccer on TV — they wanted cartoons — but there was little to see. (“Just Serie A matches broadcast in Italian,” supplement by VHS tapes, Martino says.)
Things are much different now. And Martino is a huge part of that, thanks to NBC’s strong commitment to the game.
Martino lives in Los Angeles. He and his wife, actress Eva Amurri, have a baby girl. But he commutes every week to Stamford, where he, fellow Westporter Rebecca Lowe and the rest of the NBC crew get up long before dawn to deliver high-quality telecasts of every match.
Martino’s life in soccer has taken him around the world. Now he’s right back, 20 minutes from where he grew up. And whenever he can, he gives a shout-out on the air (and on Twitter) to the Staples soccer Wreckers.
