James Hickok ’13 Inspires Wreckers
Two days before leaving for Scotland — and a tryout with a Second Division team — James Hickok ’13 stopped by Staples.
In a special session with all returning varsity, reserve and freshman players, the Dartmouth College 2-time captain and former high school All-American discussed his high school and college soccer careers, his time at Dartmouth, and what lies ahead.
Hickok noted the many lessons he learned at Staples. He cited the strong influence of coach Tom Henske, off the field as well as on. Hickok emphasized the role his high school coaches played in his college preparation, from getting him ready to play at the highest level and instilling a professional, winning mentality to helping him deal with the recruiting process.
Players peppered him with questions. Asked how he feels about heading overseas, Hickok replied, “I’ll be coming into a new team, where I don’t know anyone. Most of them are 10 years older than I am. And I’m trying to take someone’s job.” He vowed to be humble but confident — character traits that will serve him well.
The Wreckers were inspired by Hickok’s story. Several contacted him afterward, thanking him for helping them understand what it takes to reach their goals.
